KME 2010 Predator, Safest Chassis Available to the Fire Service

August 27, 2010

When the KME Predator chassis was introduced to the fire service in 2003, it set a new standard for interior ergonomics, visibility and customization. In addition it was designed with unsurpassed ruggedness of critical structural components like occupant doors and engine doghouse. Seven years later, KME Fire Apparatus has taken its 2010 Predator chassis and brought it to an even higher standard of occupant safety. After a full battery of third party testing by a nationally recognized firm in compliance with SAE-J2420, SAE-J2422, and ECE R29, the KME Predator has proven to be the safest chassis available to the fire service.

During roof crush testing, 110,000lbs of direct weight was placed upon the roof resulting in no intrusion or structural failure. This is 4 ½ times the required standard. KME also successfully completed the frontal impact test at 2.1 times the required standard and, this is unmatched by any other supplier.

In addition to unsurpassed safety through structural integrity, the Predator Chassis was also designed to making even everyday operations safer.  New cab steps provide better grip for entrance and egress and the best seals designed to keep dirt and debris away from stepping surfaces.  New door latches provide a sure grip, even with a gloved hand, for quick access to the cab. The KME Predator has the widest door opening in the industry allowing for natural movement while entering or exiting the apparatus.  The dash layout was engineered to provide both the driver and the officer with quick and simple access to all switches and functions with clear and concise information screens in high visibility locations. Basic chassis functions can now be found directly on the steering wheel, allowing the driver to operate many items without removing his or her hands from the wheel.  Even the air conditioning was improved, providing 20% more CFM’s for both front and rear occupants at the head and feet to give fire fighters a more comfortable rehab area.

Lastly, KME now offers the most complete safety package for firefighters with our Total Occupant Protection (TOP) system. A frontal impact protection system (LifeGuard 4FrontTM) for both driver and officer in the event of a front-end impact.  As well as RollTekTM, a rollover occupant protection system for both front and rear occupants. These items are available on all KME 2010 Predator chassis.

The 2010 KME Predator chassis family includes a full range of configurations in multiple lengths, widths and heights for all types of apparatus. Electrical systems include multiplexed and hard wire options and engine options range from 300hp to 600hp with both SCR and Advanced EGR (no DEF) models.
